This time of year is especially exciting for us at The Station Inn. As the days shorten, the temperatures drop, and the leaves turn their vibrant hues, we finally combine two of our biggest passions: fall railroad photography and fall foliage photography.
Our lust for photography even helped inspire our Artist-In-Residence Program, which was kick-started by the talented Michael Froio.
Of course, we also celebrate the eye-catching photos from pros like Craig Hensley:
…and we always love sharing photos from accounts like Norfolk Southern:
While stunning, these photos belie a simple fact: Fall railroad photography and fall foliage photography are tough. There’s an art to this photography that’s one part technical and one part knowing where to go—and those are two critical ingredients when it comes to the very best train photos.

1. The Horseshoe Curve
To study the history of the Horseshoe Curve is to study the history of America’s remarkable industrial past—and the rise and fall of Pennsylvania’s rich railroad history.

2. Jim Thorpe
Nestled in the Lehigh Gorge, Jim Thorpe combines historic railroad charm with stunning fall backdrops.
The town’s Victorian architecture, winding valley lines, and scenic excursions on the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway make it a top photography destination. In autumn, the bold colors of the Pocono Mountains frame each passing train perfectly.
3. Lancaster
Pennsylvania’s Amish Country is gorgeous all year long, but it’s especially scenic after the corn’s been harvested and the rolling hills reveal the changing leaves on every horizon.
Of course, Lancaster is also famous for the borough of Strasburg, home to the Strasburg Railroad and the adjacent Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania—two can’t-miss attractions for any train lover!
4. Cassandra Overlook
The famous Cassandra Overlook was once part of the Pennsylvania Route 53, but it has since been repurposed into a popular destination for both rail enthusiasts and sightseers alike.
This quiet spot offers a stunning view of Norfolk Southern’s busy Pittsburgh Line, making it a prime location to capture the majesty of modern railroading. Here are a few examples of the types of shots you can look forward to from the safety of the overlook (As you can imagine, they look even prettier during the fall months!):

Tips for Fall Foliage Photography
Great fall foliage and railroad photography is an art. Like any art, you can learn the techniques to become great.
Here are some of our favorite tips:
1. Plan for the Light
Lighting can make or break a fall foliage shot. Aim for early morning or late afternoon, when the “golden hour” adds warmth and enhances reds and yellows.
Don’t overlook the soft, blue tones of dawn, either—it can create dramatic contrasts. Scout locations beforehand so you’re positioned when the light is at its best.
2. Use Layers In Your Photos
Depth is key in railroad photography. Place colorful leaves or branches in the foreground, let the train occupy the middle ground, and frame distant mountains or valleys in the background. This layered approach draws the eye through the image.
Experiment with different angles—crouch low, shoot wide, or frame through trees—for more dynamic results.
3. Polarize It
A circular polarizing filter can be your best friend for fall photos. It reduces reflections from wet leaves and metallic train surfaces, while also deepening the blue of autumn skies. This makes colors more saturated and vibrant.
Just remember, polarizers cut light—so balance your exposure settings to avoid underexposing the train itself.
4. Mind the Weather
Overcast skies may seem dull, but they’re a secret weapon for photographers. Diffused light eliminates harsh shadows and helps foliage colors stand out in rich detail. Cloudy days also let you photograph longer without worrying about blown-out highlights.
If it rains, water on the leaves can enhance contrast and create a glossy, dramatic look.
5. Be Patient
Railfanning often means waiting, sometimes for hours. Instead of getting frustrated, use the downtime wisely. Test new compositions, adjust camera settings, or capture landscapes while waiting for the next train.
Bring a scanner or use a scanner audio app on your smartphone to anticipate arrivals. Patience rewards you with unique shots—sometimes the unexpected train makes the best photo.
6. Dress Appropriately
Capturing that perfect train photo can take hours, and when you’re wandering through the mountains of Pennsylvania, that could mean exposing yourself to cold weather, sudden rain, and strong winds.
Wear layers to protect yourself from the elements, especially as we approach the end of the year, and bring some water and snacks to keep yourself fueled.
